Home Deep Cleaning Checklist for Hyderabad Homes (Room by Room)

Most Hyderabad homes get a serious clean once or twice a year, usually just before Diwali or Sankranti, or when guests are about to visit. It always takes longer than planned, because it's hard to know where to start. This home deep cleaning checklist breaks the job down room by room, with a few tips for two problems almost every Hyderabad home has: fine dust and hard water.

Living room

• Dust ceiling corners and remove cobwebs
• Clean ceiling fan blades (use an old pillowcase so the dust doesn't fall everywhere)
• Wipe light fittings, switchboards and door handles
• Clean window glass, grills and the sliding channels, where Hyderabad dust builds up fast
• Vacuum the sofa, cushions and under the seats; shampoo fabric sofas if they're stained
• Dust the TV unit, shelves, frames and showpieces
• Wash curtains or vacuum them in place
• Move furniture and clean underneath, then scrub and mop the floor

Kitchen

• Empty and wipe cabinet shelves; check for expired items
• Degrease wall tiles behind the stove, where oil and masala build up in a sticky layer
• Clean the chimney exterior and filters (soak filters in hot water with a degreaser)
• Scrub the stove, burners and the slab, including the gap where the slab meets the wall
• Descale the sink and taps
• Clean the fridge inside and out, and the microwave
• Wipe cabinet fronts and handles
• Scrub floor tiles and grout, especially near the stove

Tip: Granite kitchen slabs are tough, but lemon and vinegar can still dull the polish over time. Use a mild dish soap solution for everyday wiping.

Bathrooms

• Descale taps, shower heads and fittings
• Scrub wall and floor tiles, focusing on grout lines
• Remove hard-water marks from glass partitions and mirrors
• Deep clean the WC, including under the rim and around the base
• Clean the exhaust fan and the window louvres
• Wipe the washbasin, vanity and cabinet

Hyderabad hard water tip: White scale forms quickly in borewell-supplied homes. Bathroom descalers work well on ceramic tiles and chrome. But if your bathroom floor is marble, keep descalers off it, because they'll etch the stone.

Bedrooms

• Dust fans, lights, wardrobe tops and AC vents
• Vacuum mattresses and flip them; wash or replace pillow covers
• Clean the wardrobe exterior and mirrors
• Clean under the bed and behind headboards
• Wash windows, grills and curtains
• Mop and, if needed, scrub the floor

Balconies and utility area

• Sweep out dust and dry leaves; clear the drain outlet
• Remove bird droppings and pigeon nesting material, wearing a mask
• Wash the floor and railing
• Clean the washing machine area and the area behind it

Floors: finish strong

Floors come last, after all the dust from above has settled. Machine scrubbing removes far more dirt than a mop, especially from textured tiles and grout. For marble, granite and Italian marble, use only a pH-neutral cleaner. If the marble still looks dull after cleaning, the shine has worn away, and only professional marble polishing will bring it back. More cleaning won't.
