Diamond Polishing vs Normal Marble Polishing: Which Gives a Mirror Finish?

Two marble floors are polished in the same apartment block. One still shines three years later; the other looks dull within a couple of months. Usually the difference isn't the marble at all. It's the polishing method. This article explains diamond polishing vs normal marble polishing, so you know what you're paying for and which method actually lasts.
Key differences
- Diamond polishing grinds and refines the stone itself in stages, using diamond-embedded pads, so the shine comes from the marble
- "Normal" or chemical polishing often relies on polishing powders, wax or coatings, so the shine sits on top of the marble
- Diamond polishing costs a little more but lasts much longer
What is "normal" marble polishing?
The term covers a range of methods. At the cheaper end, it means a single-disc machine with a polishing powder or stone, sometimes followed by a wax or "shiner" coat. This can look good on day one. But it doesn't remove scratches or level the floor, and any coating wears off where people walk, leaving a patchy finish.
Some low-cost methods use acidic powders that create a quick, glassy shine by chemically reacting with the surface. Over time this weakens the top layer and makes the floor more prone to etching.
What is diamond polishing?
Diamond polishing uses pads with industrial diamonds set into resin or metal, in a sequence of grits from coarse to very fine. It's the same idea as sandpaper, but much more precise and long-lasting.
- Grinding (coarse grits): removes lippage, deep scratches and the worn surface layer
- Honing (medium grits): removes grinding marks and smooths the surface
- Polishing (fine grits): builds a natural shine from the stone itself
- Crystallisation / buffing (optional): adds extra depth and gloss
Because the shine comes from the refined stone, not a coating, it lasts much longer. Even when it starts to fade, a light buff brings it back.
| Factor | Normal / chemical polishing | Diamond polishing |
|---|---|---|

| Levels uneven slabs | No | Yes (grinding stage) |
| Source of shine | Powder, wax or coating | The stone itself |
| Typical life in a home | Weeks to a few months | 2 – 3 years |
| Typical cost in Hyderabad | ₹8 – ₹15 / sq ft | ₹25 – ₹45 / sq ft |
| Best for | Quick temporary shine | Long-term restoration, mirror finish |
We offer full diamond polishing for marble, granite, Italian marble and mosaic floors across Hyderabad.
Diamond Floor PolishingDoes diamond polishing work on all floors?
Yes. Diamond polishing works on Indian marble, Italian marble, granite, mosaic and terrazzo, Kota stone and even concrete. The grit sequence and machine speed change for each stone. Italian marble, for example, needs a gentler touch and finer final grits than granite.
How to tell what method a contractor uses
Ask these questions before you book:
- "How many grit stages will you use, and starting from which grit?"
- "Will you remove lippage between slabs?"
- "Do you use any wax, coating or acid powder?"
- "How long will the work take for my area?"
A contractor quoting a very low per sq ft rate and promising to finish a 3BHK in a few hours is almost certainly not doing multi-stage diamond work.
Is diamond polishing worth the extra cost?
For most homes, yes. Because it lasts several times longer, the cost per year is often lower than repeated cheap polishing. And it's better for the marble itself. For a full breakdown of rates, see our marble polishing cost guide. Then keep the shine going with our marble maintenance tips.
Frequently asked questions
What is diamond polishing on marble?
It's a multi-stage process using diamond-embedded pads, from coarse to fine grits, to grind, hone and polish the marble so the shine comes from the stone itself.
Is diamond polishing better than normal polishing?
Yes, for durability. It removes scratches and levels the floor, and the shine lasts years instead of weeks.
How much does diamond polishing cost in Hyderabad?
Typically ₹25 to ₹45 per sq ft depending on the stone, floor condition and finish. Italian marble is at the higher end.
Does diamond polishing create a lot of dust?
Professional diamond polishing is mostly done wet, so dust is minimal. There will be some slurry, which the crew cleans up.
