How to maintain polished marble floors

You've just had your marble floor polished and it looks amazing. The big question is how to keep it that way. Marble is beautiful but sensitive, and many everyday habits in Indian homes, like phenyl mopping, lemon-based cleaners and wet mops left standing, slowly undo a polish. Here's a practical guide on how to maintain marble floors after polishing.

The five rules that matter most

  1. Keep grit out with doormats
  2. Dry-mop daily, wet-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner only
  3. Never use acid, vinegar, lemon, phenyl or bleach
  4. Wipe spills immediately, especially on light or Italian marble
  5. Get a professional re-polish when walking paths turn dull

The first 48 hours after polishing

After a crystallisation or sealing step, avoid wet mopping for a day or two. Keep heavy furniture off until it's fully dry, and lift furniture into place rather than dragging it. Fit felt pads under chair and table legs before moving them back.

Daily care

  • Dry-mop or sweep with a soft broom or microfibre mop. Hyderabad dust is gritty and acts like sandpaper under footsteps.
  • Wet-mop with plain water or a few drops of pH-neutral cleaner in a bucket. Wring the mop well, since marble doesn't like standing water.
  • Dry the floor afterwards if your mop leaves streaks, especially with hard water.

What never to use on marble

Product Why it's harmful
Phenyl and strong disinfectants Leaves a film; some formulas dull the polish
Vinegar, lemon, "natural" acidic cleaners Etches the surface and leaves dull patches
Toilet / tile acid cleaners Burns the polish instantly
Bleach Can discolour and weaken the surface
Abrasive powders and scrubbers Leave fine scratches
Wax-based floor shiners Build up, attract dust and turn yellow

Dealing with common stains

Tea, coffee and food

Blot, don't wipe, then clean with a damp cloth and neutral cleaner. Act fast. Light marble absorbs colour quickly.

Oil and ghee

Blot immediately. For older oil stains, a stone poultice can draw the oil out. Ask us before trying home remedies.

Turmeric and kumkum

Common in pooja rooms. Wipe quickly. Old turmeric stains often fade with sunlight exposure and a professional poultice.

Hard water marks

Wipe water off marble rather than letting it dry, especially near bathrooms and kitchen sinks. Don't use descalers on marble.

Floor already dull, etched or scratched? A professional diamond polish brings the shine back.

Marble Polishing Services

Monthly and yearly care

  • Monthly: move light furniture and clean underneath; check felt pads
  • Every 6–12 months: consider re-sealing kitchens, dining areas and Italian marble
  • Every 2–3 years: book a professional polish for high-traffic areas

Signs your marble needs a professional re-polish

  • A visible dull "path" from the entrance to the sofa or kitchen
  • Light scratches you can see when light reflects across the floor
  • Dull rings or patches where something acidic spilled
  • Darkened or open joints

A light maintenance polish costs much less than a full restoration, so don't wait for the floor to look completely worn. For an idea of costs, read marble polishing cost in Hyderabad. For the difference between polishing methods, see diamond polishing vs normal polishing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best cleaner for marble floors?

A pH-neutral cleaner or a stone-specific cleaner diluted in water. Plain water with a microfibre mop also works for daily cleaning.

Can I use phenyl on marble floors?

It's best avoided. Phenyl leaves a residue film and some formulas dull the polish over time. Use a pH-neutral cleaner instead.

How long does marble polish last?

In a typical home, a proper diamond polish lasts around 2 to 3 years with good care. Busy areas may need a light touch-up sooner.

How do I remove dull spots from marble?

Dull spots are usually acid etching, which cleaning won't fix. Light etching can be buffed out by a professional; deeper marks need re-honing and polishing.
